tired...

I just finished out in the yard. Our yard isn't magically beautiful. The dandilions are still there. The grass still sucks. But, the grass and knee high dandelions are all mowed! I decided that it was the day for mowing. Jeff does the dishes, so I decided to mow. I felt nice and accomplished for the first half. Now I'm too tired to feel accomplished. I'm going to throw my clothes in the laundry and take a cool shower. Then maybe I can look at the yard and say "that looks good!"

I was expecting more overcast with showers today, which is one reason I decided to mow the lawn. I wanted our tall dandelions to go away before it got too wet to mow... It's hard wok pushing around the stupid mower on the not flat yard!

Off to freshen up.

Good for you getting that yard work done. I've got to do that too.
Tomorrow we are renting a real mulching lawn more to get the durn dandelions once and for all. We'll see how that goes.

I've got this fantastic yard and I just havent gotten into the groove of taking care of it.

No lawn mower will take care of dandelions once and for all... You either need to spray them or dig them up. I bought a little weed popper and try to spend 10 or 15 minutes a week popping out the darn things. A friend gave me a tip to go back over the dirt circles where the plants used to be with grass seed and a handful of potting soil (so the birds don't eat the seed). That works marvelously in the spring and fall or during rainy seasons, but I don't see much point when I'm not watering the rest of the lawn right now...

Oh well. I love my yard too. What I did was decide on a few projects that I really wanted and start those. Put all your extra (ha!) energy into those projects the first year. Then, the next year, you can decide what else you want to do. Or that everything else can just be maintained the way it is... :-) Have fun!

Right but my little pushmower wont even eat the stems. I used a light weed killer on the dandelions a couple of weeks ago and saw some improvement, but now i need to get rid of the stems too. I figure I'll run the mulching more, get everything to a decent spot, reapply the weed killer and then adress it in another week or so.

The one thing I'm holding onto is the thought that gardens can last all year long. Carrots, Spinach and other greens do better when planted later in the year anyway. I've got a book on gardening west of the Cascades and will be putting it to use shortly. I think my first project is going to be cutting my roses down a bit and then sprouting off bits to make more rose plants. The roses are gorgeous I'd just prefer they not be in the veggie garden.

Got it! I forgot you had a push mower. We have an old electric mower that you can borrow if you don't want to rent a mower. I think we have used if for mulching before, but we usually wait too long until the grass is too long to mulch without like 15 passes... :-) We just need to coordinate...

Good luck on the roses. I've never been able to propagate things that way. I like roses too, but I think I would be irritated if they were in my veggie garden too. I suppose you could always transplant them this fall or next spring. But, if I remember correctly, they are big. That would be A LOT of work! Aren't yards fun?!?!?

Thanks for the offer. The rental is a one time thing and isnt too expensive. I just want to do it this once then work on maintaining.

The rose bushses are huge and thats part of the problem. I want to uproot them eventually and put them in large pots of their own. I think right in the front yard as a barrier between the parking and the yard would be good.
We'll see.

(and clearly though I'm still at work, I dont want to work anymore)
