Folklife was fun!
On Saturday, I started the day watching Turkish dancing. That was followed up with exploring the uncommon markets with Jeff (and buying my new earings). We bought a buan bow (hum bow) from the Vietnamese shop and it was pretty dang good. We also pulled out our lentils and hummus for an early lunch. It was pretty funny because some of my Shoreline friends just happened to see us and we got to visit. They also tried (and liked) both the lentils and the hummus! Yea for trying new foods! After lunch, checked out the Quebecois music and step dance. The group was pretty fun, but Jeff commented they weren't as good as Matapat that we saw one year... that's a pretty hard standard to beat! :-) Jeff left at that point (he was tired and his bus transfer was going to run out). I ran over to catch the last of Vela Luka (Croation dance). I check them out every year, and they are always pretty dang good! After that, I wandered back over to the international dance stage and saw a Kabuki group. They did several dance numbers and a samishen performance. The dancing was very styleized, but I think I enjoyed it. I really liked the samishen number. right after the Kabuki was a group from Vietnam. It was mostly and instrumental group, but there was also a dance. It was all pretty cool. I don't think I've ever seen or heard a zither, but I liked it. Then was a group that performed tribal dances from the middle east and N. Africa. I liked some of those better than others. In the evening, I saw Tlinkit dancing for the first time (alaskan native americans for those not in the know... :-). I also saw Scottish and more classical Indian dancing (the Indian dancing is really growing on me...) as well as some belly dancing. I caught up with some of my Oregon dance friends at the balkan women's choir performance (it was nice to visit with my friends after).
Then I rode the bus back to Gene's to catch the end of ed board and visit with my friends. My bad bus karma was still with me. Just before I got off the bus, it started to rain. It rained harder and harder and harder as I walked up to Gene's. I didn't think about calling Jeff until I was already half way there. I'm sure I looked like a drowned rat as I walked in. Luckily, my rain coat worked pretty nicely, and I had an extra pair of pants in the car to change into.
of course, not long after I got in, the rain stopped. And there was no more the rest of the evening... Just my luck! :-)
Sunday was all about missing folklife and spending the day gaming with my friends. I'm kind of sad I missed the big balkan dance party, but I did have lots of fun!
Monday was a lazy day. I didn't get up until 9 am! Jeff made me waffles for breakfast, and we didn't head out to folk life until 1 or so... We saw 3 things at folklife: taiko drumming, a circus act, and Dana Lyons (the cows with guns guy). They were all pretty cool. The Taiko group were all teenagers, so they weren't as tight as they could be, but it was still a very cool performance. Well attended too! we just caught the end of the circus act, but it was cool because a girl did a performance on a rope. It was WAY cool (how the heck is she DOING that!?!?!). Dana Lyons was also a fun performance. On his CD, I only really liked the Cows With Guns song, but it was a lot more fun live... And I didn't even get too sunburned wathing the shows. Just a bit red about the neckline of my shirt. I didn't put the sunscreen on soon enough... :-)
Jeff also found another australian hat to get. This time for only $20. It's made of kangaroo leather and is very soft and light weight.
We had no bus problems getting back to Gene's place. Yea! Maybe it was because Jeff and I were riding together this time... Anywho. We had a nice visit with Gene and Mike until it was time to head up to Deb's house. I'm kind of sad I missed Deb's email asking if we could reschedule...(it's ok, Deb! Really! :-). We spent a bit of time visiting with Deb then decided to be decadent and go out to dinner at Red Robin. The fries were good as always. I was excited to see that the wraps were back on the menu. I used to really like the ceasar wrap. So I ordered the wrap/chowder combo. Our waiter verified my order before leaving. Then he proceded to bring the wrong kind of wrap. Luckily, when he took my wrap back to get the right one, he left me my chowder so I would have something to eat. He did bring me my fries about the time I finished the chowder. I finally got my wrap. But it was really cold in the middle and just luke warm aroud the edges (like it had come out of the freezer and been microwaved or something). It also didn't taste the same as I was remembering. I didn't really like it. I was going to complain about both the service and the food, but we noted that he took the wrap off the bill without us asking. Now I'm just going to complain about the food... :-) Oh well. I got a bite of Jeff's burger, and it was pretty good. I'll just have to remember that I only want burgers at Red Robin... At least the fries were still good! :-)
And that was my busy, busy weekend. now I'm just catching up. The laudry and the bread are both started (in fact, it's time to go knead the bread). I also did the grocery shopping this morning. I love being able to walk to the grocery store and the produce place just a block further. I love being able to get a big bag of produce for $6. I also love that it's sunny today and not too hot yet...
Well, I best go work on the bread and get on to the rest of the to do list.
