for the win (I hope)

Today involved beating up computers. But, as of about 3:00, I have Linux 8 on the server box! Now I just need to put the other computer back together to do some scanning and photo editing tonight.
For whatever reason, the DVD rom in the server box (DVD R/CD RW-I think) wouldn't boot a DVD. I knew the DVD worked because Jeff just used it on his laptop. However, I just got boot errors. So I asked Jeff if I could put the drive in my computer that I know will boot a DVD and install without having to take the other computer apart. Jeff either misunderstood me or thought he imparted the wisdom of attempting to swap DVD drives first. I wish he had imparted that information. It would have saved me a few hours...
Anyway, I started the day off by doing some deep scans on the 80 gig drive that used to hold windows and now was not booting anything. The program I was using found a bunch of sector errors and repaired them by (I think) writing zeros to the lot of them. Anyway, it said it was fixed. We'll hope that's all it was... :-) After that, I wiped the drive so that a bad windows install wouldn't slow down the process of putting on the linux installation. Then I putzed with trying to install linux.
The DVD wouldn't work in the server box, and it looks like the ISO cds I made of linux 6 were not bootable. So I had the bright idea of putting the hard drive in my other computer (so that I wouldn't have to take it apart any more than necessary.) After a couple of false starts and issues with loose cables, I finally got Linux installing.
Then I tried putting the happily installed hard drive back in the other computer.
No more workey.
So, after calling Jeff and determining that the hard drive really needed to be in the computer it was going to live in before installing linux, I ended up pulling the DVD drive out of the desktop and just hooking it up to the server box. Then I installed again. And now it seems to work. Halleleujah.
So, the next task is to see if it's possible to pull some data of the other drive. I'm hoping the directories that I want (Ie, my website) are not munged up too badly. I can recreate the website, but it hasn't been backed up really recently. Oh well. The main reason I want it up is so I can get our wishlists up. And so I have a place to play with website design stuff and online portfolio...
But now it's time for dinner. I'm having grilled cheese and Jeff is having a totinos pizza
we live such exciting lives, eh? But I do feel accomplished that I have achieved functioning OS on the server box again. Let's hope it lasts!
