I just saw a trailer for MMP golf... I don't know how to embed youtube stuff, so I'm going to send you to the LJ where I saw the link.

It's really cute even if I don't understand it... :-)

In other news, the week is going pretty well. I haven't been quite as up on the housekeeping as I was last time, but things are still better than at home. I'm hoping to practice some of the skills I'm trying to learn while I'm here and then see if I can apply them at home.

Friend's mother is doing as well as can be expected. She's had a couple of really nice unexpected remember moments and some kind of sad forgetful moments. It was hard handing her the phone and then having to put it in place because she was holding it like a microphone and trying to talk in the ear piece. But it was wonderful having her remember the morning after her birthday that she got new clothes, which clothes in her closet were new, and that she wanted to wear them... :-)

I might get to have a pedicure at a nice spa. I've never had a pedicure before... It's not certain, but I'm kind of hopeful. :-)

I watched a feel good movie tonight on the Hallmark channel. I started watching it with my mom til we realized it was going to go to 11pm (well, 10:37 as it turned out... :-). Then I finished it. It was called You've Got a Friend, and I liked it.

I tried a new recipe today. It was a roasted root veggie dish. I chopped up a rutabaga, a turnip, a sweet potato/yam, a few brussel sprouts, and a couple of golden beets. Then I put them in a ziplock and tossed them with olive oil, rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper. I ended up cooking them on the stove because my mom's pans are good enough that they continue to cook with the heat off and I needed them to cook while I was picking up friend's mom. The recipe calls to bake them in the oven. The recipe also called for a couple of parsnips instead of beets, but the store didn't have them. It was kind of funny. The only one of those root veggies I've ever used before was a sweet potato. I had no clue what the others even looked like. So, when I went to the store this morning, I had to ask the produce guy to help me. He was very nice, and informative, and didn't even laugh at my lack of root veggie knowledge... :-) Verdict? I mostly liked them. I will be making them again. I won't be using brussel sprouts. (Sorry, Jeff, you still can't make me like brussel sprouts.... I could taste them through all the other flavors... :-) But the rest of the veggies were pretty good. I will also probably be using Italian seasoning instead of straight rosemary. I think I also want to try roasting them in the oven. But... Well, I think I liked it. learn something new every day!

Before going to the fair last week(was it only last week?!?! yikes!), I would have told you that there was no way you could possibly prepare a sweet potato or a yam where I would have liked it. I can't stand the Thanksgiving marshmallow/yam/whatever concoction that most people seem to really like. And the other times I tried it plain I also didn't like it. Then I went to the waterless cookware demo at the fair. A year or two ago, my mom bought herself a new set of waterless cookware and passed her old set on to me. (it's made by West Bend, but sold under a variety of labels. Kitchen craft is the flavor you see at the Puyallup fair). I had read that you could cook without needing to use water, but I didn't know how to do it and wanted to see what they do. They did amazing things! My favorite was that they cooked veggies that I didn't like, and, without adding salt or other flavorings, they weren't bad. The yam, in particular, was really good! So now I'm playing with trying to cook like they did so that my food tastes good too. I think Jeff is getting tired of me saying 'well, at the Kitchen Craft demo, they said....' :-)

Hence the trying of the new recipe today... :-)

Anyway, I should go to bed. Friend's mother decided to go to bed early, so she may get up early... :-)

FWIW, a sweet potato is just a deep yellow color; what most folks think are sweet potatoes are really garnet yams (which I prefer; they have a more intense flavor, if you can call a yam intense)...

Hm. Olive oil and italian seasoning. Have to run that one by [livejournal.com profile] cflute, who likes her yams savory (I like'em roasted (or nuked, if I'm in a hurry, which I often am) and split open with butter and brown sugar and cinnamon. But then, I like a lot of things sweet that folks like savory...

Waterless cookware... cast iron? One is curious...

waterless cookware has an aluminum core with stainless steel encasing it. They are really heavy duty and have a life time warranty! :-) They heat really evenly and and you can cook veggies and such without water. Heat the pan on medium until the moisture in the food starts to steam, then either turn it down to low and cook, or turn it off and let it sit.

I'm only just learning how to use them that way! :-)

Are you heating with gas or electric? (Does it make a difference?) We've got one of those glass-top electric units now... *sigh* I want a gas, bad... :)

We have electric, but I know that they were cooking over gas in the video I watched. I wish we had gas too, but... well, what can you do? :-)
